The number of children with SEND is growing year on year throughout the country and the latest DfE figures put them at over 1.4 million. There has been a rise of 10% during the last twelve months. The overall national provision for such children and young people (CYP) is poor and the Commons Education Select Committee , after a lengthy consultation, issued a very critical report last October.
Each one of these children will have his/her own history, and own strengths and needs. I place strengths first, for it is often forgotten that children who, for whatever reason, have different learning profiles , also have areas in which they can succeed as well as any other child, and these areas demand as much development as any learning need, as it is from these strengths that careers may flow.
MHF recognises this and recommends that schools offer the widest possible curriculum, which does not have to demand excessive use of resources.
In supporting learning differences, it must also be remembered that CYPs with SEND, will spend almost all their time in “normal” lessons, so MHF places a great emphasis on staff training and that means all the staff. There is too much mystique about supporting SEND CYPs. Good teachers will, automatically, devise different ways of getting points across to the different students in their classes, and, with a little more training, they can be more effective and produce better outcomes for more SEND CYPs too.
Since its inception, MHF has been busy going into schools to help solve problems and to deliver training, across the UK and , to a more limited extent, abroad.
If you think we can help you improve your SEND provision, deliver training to your staff, if you need specific help with a current “challenge” , develop your learning support department, or even open a new school, do get in touch with us using our contact form.
